Wash-Care Guide for Shibori Sarees

Dry Clean Only

Always opt for professional dry cleaning to best preserve the fabric’s natural sheen, texture, and the delicate Shibori dye technique. This is especially important for Tussar silk sarees, where dry cleaning ensures longevity and maintains the luxurious drape.

Wash

For occasional home care, Shibori sarees in Chanderi silk-cotton blends may be hand-washed separately in cold water using a mild, pH-neutral detergent. Avoid soaking for too long, rubbing, or wringing, as these can damage the weave and affect the tie-dye detailing.

Dry

Let the saree dry naturally in shade, either laid flat or hung in a well-ventilated spot. Direct sunlight should be avoided, as it can fade the natural dyes and weaken the silk fibres. Never twist or wring the fabric; instead, allow it to drip dry to retain its soft texture and flow.

Iron

Always iron on the reverse side using a medium silk-friendly temperature. To protect the dye patterns and fabric, place a thin cotton cloth between the saree and the iron. This ensures the patterns remain crisp and the fabric stays smooth.

Store

Fold the saree neatly and wrap it in a muslin cloth to allow proper air circulation and prevent moisture buildup. Store it in a cool, dry place away from sunlight to avoid fading. Refold every three to four months to prevent permanent creasing. Chanderi silk-cotton sarees should be stored lightly, while Tussar silk sarees are best kept in breathable cotton bags rather than plastic covers.

Chemicals & Spot Cleaning

Avoid harsh chemicals, bleach, detergents, or stain removers on Shibori sarees. For light stains, gentle spot cleaning with mild soap may be done, but for stubborn stains always opt for professional dry cleaning to protect both the fabric and the intricate Shibori technique.
